QUIT SOMETHING

Bob Goff, author of the wonderful book “Love Does,” loves to remind us that “you can quit anything on a Thursday.” Bob is a lawyer, leads a non-profit, is a best-selling author and highly sought-after speaker, and even serves as the Honorary Consul to the Republic of Uganda. It’s fair to say, Bob Goff is a busy guy!

Each week on what he calls “Quit Thursday,” Bob challenges us to take inventory of what we are giving our finite time, energy, and resources to. What commitments fill our buckets, align with our values, and bring us purpose and joy?

During that time of reflection, we are also called to view the other side of the ledger. What are we doing that no longer serves us or our purpose? Where are we wasting time, energy, and opportunity? What things of value (relationships, projects, opportunities, etc.) are we cheating of our full attention because we are too busy, over-committed and just plain exhausted?

Go ahead, make your list. I bet it’s not pretty!

If you are looking to grow personally and/or professionally, you need to make space. You need to take inventory. Are there old habits, negative soundtracks, or tired and inefficient routines causing mental clutter that make it hard to move? Hard to breathe? Hard to see a better way? Spoiler alert. . .the answer is YES.

Driving through Vermont recently I saw a sign approaching a steep incline that read “TEST YOUR BRAKES.” I think this is a wonderful invitation for all of us. Where in your life might you tap the brakes and make sure you can stop before faced with a situation where you must stop. A few things from my list: doom scrolling, over-promising, interrupting, overthinking, and peanut butter pretzels.

Now it’s your turn. Make your mental inventory. Test your brakes. Then quit something!

ThingsToStop (1)As important as knowing what to START doing, it’s important to know what to STOP doing. “Because we’ve always done it this way” is a terrible reason to do something. This month, we’ll share things you should STOP doing to further your organization.
