Richard Clegg serves as a strategic consultant and thinking partner for a wide range of nonprofit organizations. His 40+ years of experience working in various program, leadership, and executive positions gives him unique insight into the challenges and complexities of managing mission-based organizations.

Before coming to DBD Group, Richard consulted with YMCAs and other nonprofit community-based organizations with operating revenues from $1M to $80M in the areas of strategy development, strategic planning, board development and governance, executive transition, and organizational capacity building.
While working for the YMCA’s national resource office, Richard co-developed and executed a national strategy, Membership By Design, for more than 850 YMCA Associations increasing membership acquisition and retention nationwide. He served as a national trainer for more than 20 years in leadership, management, and program training. He is a certified Master Trainer for Managing Inclusion from Global Novations, holds an Advanced Certificate of Nonprofit Board Consulting from BoardSource, and co-led the integration of Real-Time Strategic Planning with La Piana Consulting as a national YMCA strategy. He retired in 2023 from the YMCA to continue his work as a consultant in the nonprofit sector.
A sought-after platform speaker, facilitator, and workshop presenter, he brings excitement and energy to audiences. He has conducted training across the country as well as presented on various organizational capacity strategies internationally.
Richard received his BA from the University of Toledo and an MS in Organizational Leadership from Springfield (MA) College. He and his husband Joe live in Chicago with their two English labradors. He enjoys classic movies, is an American Songbook aficionado, dabbles in landscaping, and takes advantage of everything that Chicago has to offer all year long!
