Nonprofit volunteers that serve on boards are the backbone of the organization. They offer invaluable guidance, support, and resources. While most new board member orientations cover fundamental responsibilities, a recent interaction with a CEO candidate in one of my executive searches highlighted a powerful framework for maximizing board impact.
The candidate explained he needed three types of board members: “doers,” “donors,” and “door openers.”
Here are a few thoughts on how to cultivate “3D” board members:
Doers: Clearly define roles and time commitments. Focus on action-oriented agendas that leverage their skill sets and functional expertise. Provide the necessary resources and training.
Donors: Board members lead by example with personal contributions, first. Board members actively reach out within their networks and circles of influence to share a personal and or an organization story of impact. Fundraising is a shared responsibility for everyone.
Door Openers: Facilitate connections with potential collaborators. Empower board members to identify and pursue opportunities. Introduce the organization and its work to key community leaders, policymakers, and influencers. Be an advocate and raving fan of the organization!
The traditional roles and responsibilities of being a board member are important, but effectively fulfilling the roles of "doers," "donors," and "door openers" is essential for maximizing board impact. A quick reminder that these roles will help board members expand the organization's reach, increase its visibility, and secure valuable resources.
